Before I wrote stories about crime, I prosecuted it.
My path to filmmaking didn’t begin in Hollywood. It traveled through philosophy, law, a prosecutor’s office, entertainment studios, development, and production. And every stop along the way influenced the way I tell stories.
Philosophy
Before I learned how to build a story, I learned how to build and argument. Studying philosophy at Hamilton College taught me to question assumptions, examine competing truths and look for the moral problem underneath the obvious one.
Law
At Washington and Lee University School of Law, I learned to think critically, write persuasively, and navigate complex systems. These skills now inform every story I tell.
Prosecution
As a prosecutor at the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office, the abstractions of law became human. Every case contained competing versions of the narrative, imperfect institutions, enormous consequences, and people making decisions under extraordinary pressure.
Entertainment Law
At Universal and later at Disney, I worked in business and legal affairs, where I learned how the entertainment industry works, from rights and clearances to the deals that move the machinery, from script to screen.
Production
Development taught me what a story could become. Production taught me what it takes to actually make one. Budgets, logistics, teamwork and collaboration, and the thousands of decisions that turn words into moving pictures.
Development
I moved from protecting stories to helping create them, evaluating material, working with writers and learning what makes a project both compelling and producable.
Screenwriting
From consulting on Law & Order: SVU to joining the writing staff, I made the leap from advising storytellers to being one. Writing for SVU and developing my own projects confirmed for me that I am drawn to characters who challenge the status quo.
Filmmaking
Currently, I write, develop and produce film, television and audio projects. I’m building a slate of projects that explore justice, power, survival and ultimately, what happens when the system fails. These are the types of stories that motivate me.
Beyond the Page
Curiosity fuels everything.
When I’m not writing, I’m usually reading something, growing something, or disappearing down a rabbit hole. I’m inspired by history, travel, gardening, books, and the endless complexity of human nature.
